James Parton, Telefonica O2
An influential industry leader and Chartered Marketer, James leads developer marketing for Telefonica and is a global board member of Mobile Entertainment Forum. MEF is the global trade association of the mobile media industry, focusing on providing insight, industry-changing projects and regulatory representation.
James was recently recognised by Revolution Magazine as one of the Future 50 – “The individuals who will shape the digital industry of the future”.
A regular panellist, speaker, blogger, industry awards judge, and lecturer, benefitting from a broad network developed over a 20 year career in the tech, web and mobile sectors.
With a proven delivery & innovation track record, James has reinforced O2’s position as mobile data market leaders via the successful delivery of over 25 major products, featuring 20 UK market firsts, including O2 Litmus, MMS, mobile video, mobile music downloads, and the UK DVB-H Broadcast TV trial in Oxford.
A number of these products have been award winning, including recognition for the products supporting The O2 Arena in London which won the “Best Use of Mobile” award at the 2007 UK Interactive Marketing and Advertising Awards.
James began his career in mobile sales, moving into technical support. Progressing into UNIX system administration, he was an early web developer, producing one of the first BT Intranet sites in 1996.
James branched from tech to a business path, and spent five years working at BT Openworld in various internet and digital roles; including a key role in the launch team for the BT Connect ISP, product managing BT’s web hosting portfolio, producing BT’s Public Internet Kiosk strategy, and successfully launching BT’s PhotoPlanet kiosk in 2000.
Moving to the Mobile sector, James was instrumental in developing BT’s 3G product strategy during the bidding process for BT’s 3G license.
James has also lectured in Marketing and New Product Development at The University of Oxford Faculty of Continuing Education and Reading University. James is the Southern coordinator for the CIM’s Technology Marketing Interest Group.
